ABOUT IAN DAVID SPENCER
Hello, my name is Ian David Spencer and I am an artist working in the medias of photography, digital photo manipulation and painting software. I specialise in creating other-worldly and highly imaginative artworks, having been working with digital media since 2011 when I started my art career and with photography since 1979.
My visionary, escapist and reality bending art is founded upon beliefs and theories of the existence of spaces that defy conventional understanding and are beyond the level of our current knowledge. The worlds I create are an extension of my vivid imagination (or even my inner being) that could only exist outside of our space-time, beyond the fringes of our reality in a different dimension entirely. My work seeks to transcend the boundaries of our reality, opening doorways and portals to these concealed realms where ethereal, psychedelic and even phantasmagoric spaces defy logic and challenge the mind. Nothing is quite what it seems and expect the known laws of nature to be twisted and reshaped! My art is infused with a special energy that can help silence the mind and take the viewer on a voyage of discovery or as an aid to meditation or healing. |
Playing and experimentation is at the heart of my creativity. I work intuitively and with an open mind and I would probably describe my process as a form of meditation. I am inspired much by nature and spirituality and I will also draw upon ideas and elements from science fiction, fantasy and the paranormal. Each of my works will develop in their own way and there is no end point in mind. The final piece is almost like a serendipity moment, one of pure joy and it is these moments that make my work so rewarding. I will never know what I am going to create next!

SOME THOUGHTS ABOUT MY ART.....
'I am often asked: 'Is it a photograph or a painting'? There is only one answer. It is both and neither. My work seeks to blur and cross boundaries in a literal and spiritual context for an immersive and participatory experience. In doing so the imagination is stretched, the curiosity is aroused and it gives rise to an infinite number of ideas and possibilities. Then it poses more questions than answers. This is very important in my work. If the technical aspects were more important and I had all the answers to what the narratives in my work mean, then I might as well "pack up and go home"'
'For me, my work is an alternative view on the world. It is about pushing boundaries, asking questions as well as an escapist experience. Escapism that is filled with joy and full of soul. I approach every piece with an open mind and a desire to connect the viewer with my ideas and beliefs and be a participant in my own journey'
'In my work, vision and imagination are everything. I could possess the most advanced and most expensive camera kit and software available, but if there is no vision, no imagination, no "alignment with the Universe", then I cannot create great work. This is very important.'
'I don't care if the sky is yellow, the grass is purple or the trees are blue. Or if the moon is impossibly big. Or nature is symmetrical. What matters is where do I wish to go? Where do you wish to go? All of those things may well be impossible in reality - but not on my watch'
'Beyond and between every tree, in every forest, around every stone circle and beyond every horizon, there are new worlds, new dimensions and new dreams waiting to be discovered'
'If I were to physically cross over into worlds like these, I'd want them to be a fantastical kaleidoscope of strange nature, colour, mystical magical and psychedelic goings-on!'
